Woodbridge School District Principal's Message
"The time to be happy is now, the place to be happy is here, the way to be happy is to make others so." Robert G. Ingersoll
Dear BRS Community, The energy during the Boosterthon was contagious! Students ran, skipped, walked and danced their way around the South Gym, cheered on by teachers and parents and encouraged by the awesome music! Many thanks to all of you for your support, and to our fabulous PTO, for making this event a possibility! We also celebrated the 100th day of school with exercises, math activities and celebrations! We are 100 days smarter, braver, stronger and kinder! Way to go Beecher students! January 25th was also Chinese New Year! It is the Year of the Rat and some of our students took part in special activities, books and visitors to learn about this important holiday. Finally, February marks the start of Black History Month. Did you know that every year, the month of February has a designated theme? This year the theme is "African Americans and the Vote" and is in honor of the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment (granting women's suffrage) and the sesquicentennial of the 15th Amendment (giving black men the right to vote). While we build community throughout our school daily, the month of February gives us a greater opportunity to continue to grow our awareness around learning history, and applying that to our daily lives and how we interact with people.
News from Superintendent Gilbert We are looking for parents who would be interested in serving on two short-term committees this winter/spring. We need 2 parents to serve on our recently created Board of Education Ad Hoc Safety Committee. This committee will focus on the staff and program resources necessary to address the changing and significant student behavioral needs at Beecher Road School. We will also need 2-3 parents to serve on the next Guiding Coalition that will help to construct Beecher's next Strategic Development Plan. Meetings for these two committees will likely take place in the late afternoons/evenings (Exact schedules TBD)
A Note from the Nurse We are seeing positive cases of the flu virus in our students. We want to let you know what steps we are taking to keep our school healthy and how you can help. We regularly clean frequently touched areas such as door knobs, handrails, bathroom faucets and fixtures. We also instruct students and staff to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations to fight the flu:
You can help us maintain a healthy school environment with some of the following suggestions:

Valentine's Day Valentine's Day is fast approaching! As a reminder, the Woodbridge School District has a Wellness policy that emphasizes the importance of healthy habits. As such, we request that parents DO NOT send in candy or food items for Valentine's Day. Alternatives include non-food items such as pencils, erasers etc. As each classroom is different, please refer to communication from your child's teacher about whether or not this day will be celebrated in class.
Creative Minds at Work As part of their Reader's Workshop character study, students in Ms. Rizzo's second grade class read the book The True Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles. Inspired by Ruby, the students wrote her letters sharing their thoughts, feelings and reactions to the book, and to Ruby herself! The letters were mailed off to Ruby Bridges to enjoy!
