Woodbridge School District Principal's Message
Dear BRS Community, I want to take a minute to thank the PTO for all of the work they have done on behalf of the school community. Despite the challenges of the year, they have still supported the staff and the students! This year they have managed to host several virtual author visits, purchased books for every student in a grade level written by those authors, provided treats and gifts to the teachers throughout the year but especially during Teacher Appreciation Week, and supported our graduating 6th graders in some special ways. That is just a sampling of ways that PTO has continued to be a part of, and a support to, our school. Further down in this message you will learn about the PTO Direct Ask program. I hope you take a minute to donate - every single child benefits from the work the PTO does. No amount is too small, and every donation is greatly appreciated. Thank you PTO- we appreciate YOU! Beecher Road Giving Drive Our Beecher Road Giving Drive is still underway and we need your help! We've only made a small amount of progress towards our fundraising goal and we need all hands on deck! As a reminder, this year, our goal is to raise $35,000 for important technology upgrades that will enhance both the teaching and learning experience for our students. This project is an important one within our new normal and we need your help to make this happen. Check out our online pledge page to make a donation and learn more about this project: https://give.mybooster.com/beecherroadschool
6th Grade Promotion Ceremony Attention 6th grade parents! Further information about the promotion ceremony will be coming from Dr. Budd's office early next week! Stay tuned for all of the details!
PTO Sponsored Author Visit On May 11, Grades 4 and 5 had a virtual visit from Connecticut author, Maria Scrivan. Every single student also received a copy of her graphic novel, Nat Enough, courtesy of our generous PTO. Students learned how to draw characters and add movement and emotion to their art. Ms. Scrivan also shared the importance of taking breaks from work to play as the best way to fight writer's block and solve problems. This is some advice we all can use! Library Books It's time to start looking for school library books that need to be returned. Math books, books for class projects and iPads will all be returned in June. Please have your student look around your home for any overdue books. Individual student overdue notices went home last week and updated notices will go home next week. Please contact our Librarians with any questions: Lori Patrick lpatrick@woodbridgeps.org and Larissa Crocco lcrocco@woodbridgeps.org Thank you for your support!
Student Council Update The week after April Break, Student Council announced the winners of the Pennies for Puppies drive. First and Second place came down to a difference of $20! Here is the breakdown:
That brings us to an awe-inspiring total of $3732.64!! With so much raised, we will be giving to the K9 First Responders, as well as the Woodbridge Animal Shelter and the Beardsley Zoo! All students will get a chance to view a virtual presentation given by the K9 First Responders, at the end of the month, where they will learn what our generous donations will be supporting and 'meet' the dog teams!
Student Council is so thankful for the support and generosity of our Beecher Family! Thank you so much and we wish you all a healthy and safe end to the school year!
Wellness Update Win Or Lose - You Choose… We've all experienced challenges this year– No one is untouched by this pandemic. The stressors are real and many of our worries are justified, however, reframing can help you, your children, and others in your circle to move forward. Many are referring to this past year, since the start of the pandemic, as a "lost year", but you can help yourself and your children to overcome it by stopping the perpetuation of this negative perspective.
Reframe your attitude - stop focusing on what is lost and the difficulties of this past year. Begin by acknowledging how you feel and even naming your feelings. Then remind yourself that most things are not all good nor all bad. Look for the good that has occurred in these times and seek to find more positive changes. And help your child to do the same. Listen to your children, acknowledge the challenges they have experienced, and then reassure them that they will recover and things will be okay; recognize their flexibility through these tough times, and let them know you are proud of them and their achievements. Help your child to understand that encountering obstacles in life and working through change affords opportunities to grow, to creatively problem solve, and to become stronger. This is how they build resilience.
In addition, with the arrival of spring and warmer weather, it is important that you and your children find safe ways to socially connect with others. Consider arranging distant social gatherings outdoors with a small number of people. Or find ways to use technology to socially connect with others. We encourage you to reach out to parents of classmates to arrange social activities and playdates (whether in-person or remote). Below is a list of social activities/ideas to consider and get you started - the list is by no means exhaustive. Some of these activities will need more supervision and direction than others.
Your reframing, positive guidance and interactions, and facilitation of peer social connections can make a huge difference in your child's well-being!
In good health, The BRS Wellness Team

Emergency Broadband Benefit Beecher Road School is working to help build awareness about the Emergency Broadband Benefit, a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program. The temporary benefit will help to lower the cost of broadband service for eligible households during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The $3.2B Emergency Broadband Benefit program provides a discount of up to a $50 per month toward broadband service for eligible households. The benefit also provides up to a $100 per household discount toward a one-time purchase of a computer, laptop, or tablet if the household contributes more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase through a participating broadband provider.
A household is eligible if one member of the household meets at least one of the criteria below:
