Music

Music is an art form that allows individuals to develop their aesthetic potential. Music expresses human feeling with all its shades of intensity and quiet, expansion and withdrawal, movement and rest. Music provides an outlet for student creativity and self-expression. It enables them to express their noblest thoughts and feelings. It engages their imagination and allows them to assert their uniqueness. Music exalts the human spirit and enhances the quality of life.

The Music Program

The music program should be universal, exposing students to all types of music through materials of the highest quality. Instruction should emphasize prominent musical concepts through listening, singing, describing, performing, and creating. Studying and performing quality music serves to promote personal growth within the students and teacher through their combined efforts in the educational process.

The aim of music instruction as a part of general education is to enhance the quality of life; the full expression of our humanness requires encounters with listening, performing, and creating music. Music is equally important in accomplishing the general goals of education such as values education, learning how to learn, knowledge of divergent cultures and viewpoints, cooperation and competition, and knowledge of how to function in a democratic society.

The music program should be organized with three basic experiences in mind: music as an activity, music as a skill, and music as an art. All students can participate in musical activities, at various levels, through these experiences.

The Function of Music

Music enhances the quality of human life.! The study and performance of music stimulates the growth of students' sensitivity and creative skills. It helps them discover their level of musical talent and then develop it to the highest possible level. Music has the ability and power to enrich human activity with deep meaning. Through music, we have direct means to the students' inner lives. The study of music can help the student understand better the nature of mankind. It reveals unique aspects of our relationship with other human beings and with our environment. It provides a readily accessible avenue to the study of other cultures.

Music also provides a powerful nonverbal symbol system through which individuals transform experiences into patterns of sound; thereby expressing thought and
feeling. The ability to create symbols and the obsession to use them is what makes mankind uniquely human and for this reason should be cultivated and strengthened at every opportunity. If we fail to cultivate our unique ability to make and use symbols, and allow it to atrophy over time, our humanity would be irreparably diminished.

Music as Aesthetic Education

The music experience should contain aesthetic experiences and the program of music education should center on aesthetic education. This means that music education should use expressive, quality music and that the "expressive import" or meaning of the music should receive the highest priority. Music, as a part of aesthetic education, enhances the quality of life and should be appreciated, learned, and enjoyed for its musical qualities. Activities like listening, performing, describing, and composing help students perceive the aesthetic qualities of music while developing their appreciation of the musical art.
