Health

Health Education is a critical component of a student’s ability to learn, achieve, and succeed in school. Beginning in kindergarten and continuing through high school, health education is designed to address the physical, mental, social and emotional health of a child. Twenty-first century students must learn to deal with an increasing variety of psychological and complex health issues. In a planned, sequential, and developmental manner, health education motivates and teaches students the functional knowledge and skills needed to promote personal lifelong health and wellness.

The content areas of health education, taken from the National Health Education Standards: Achieving Health Literacy, include: personal and physical growth, mental and emotional health, nutrition, injury prevention and safety, prevention and control of disease, environmental health, community health,(consumer), and substance abuse prevention. As a foundation of information is created, the school health program engages children in exploring ways to maintain and improve health, prevent disease and reduce health-related risk behaviors.
