Technology in American Schools
Posted 12/17/2010 10:00AM
Recently, Rick Wood, Technology Coordinator at Beecher, was invited by the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) to give a presentation on Technology in American Schools to a group of visiting school principals from China. The principals traveled from all parts of China on this tour organized by the Shanghai Normal University. During their two-week visit, the principals participated in presentations by Connecticut principals, superintendents of schools, professors, and Mr. Wood. They also spent a week visiting secondary schools across Connecticut.

During Mr. Wood's morning-long presentation, the principals experienced education at Beecher Road School in several ways. Mr. Wood used a variety of student work to demonstrate the ways in which students use technology in their learning. Mid-way through the morning, the principals were transported into Ms. Stephanie Eleck's sixth grade classroom via the free online videoconferencing service, Skype. The visitors observed Ms. Eleck engage students in a reading lesson integrating the classroom SmartBoard. The principals asked Ms. Eleck and her students questions about learning in America, and in return, the students asked the principals questions about life and education in China. As Beecher Road School continues its goal to connect students with others around the world, technology makes it possible.
