Talented and Gifted
General Information
The TAG program currently runs for eligible students in grades 4-6 based on gifted eligibility. TAG is designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in an enrichment-type format. Participation in TAG is voluntary, and the program takes place for 30 minutes once every 6-day cycle.
As mandated by Connecticut state statute (Connecticut General Statutes § 10-76d) screening for gifted status occurs in Grade 3. In Woodbridge, we use the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) for our initial screening process. Students who meet the cut score will then be assessed with the Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary Students (SAGES). Teachers also have the opportunity to review student scores on the NNAT and refer additional students for the SAGES based on their observations outside of the assessment. While TAG screening is required, the actual programming is offered at the discretion of the district, and there is no state requirement for gifted programming in Connecticut.
Current and Previous TAG programming consisted of the use of Tynker coding, Byrdseed TV, Invention Convention and Passion Projects. The specific activities and programs may be adjusted year to year based on the identified population.
It is important to note that beyond the Woodbridge School District, TAG identification does not impact coursework within the Amity School District. At this time, Amity is not leveling any courses based on this distinction. Students who are not eligible for TAG initially can be rescreened in future years upon parent request during the spring screening administration.
