Second Grade

Second Grade provides students with an opportunity to learn and grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Responsive Classroom is used by all second grade teachers. A social curriculum is taught along with the academic curriculum. Children learn skills such as cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control in order to promote successful interactions. Knowing and working closely with children and their parents is crucial. The Responsive Classroom philosophy encourages adults to model positive behaviors in school in order to help children learn them. Our ultimate goal is to make school a place where children feel safe, engaged and joyful.

Readers and Writer’s workshop is implemented daily in all second grade classrooms. Our goal is for all students to become avid readers and writers who use the skills and strategies learned at our side to help grow their knowledge, understanding, and enjoyment of the world around them.

In Math, the topics studied in second grade are time and money, addition and subtraction with two and three digit numbers, geometry, place value, and measurement.

In Science, students will learn about plants, matter, and the water cycle. Our goal is to incorporate science lessons that are inquiry based, active and interactive.
